Road name changes put community safety first

The names of Fraser Road and Fraser Road North in Canning Vale are being changed in response to concerns about public safety.

From 1 July 2017, Fraser Road North in the City of Gosnells will be known as Boardman Road and a portion of Fraser Road within the City of Canning will be renamed Candeloro Road.

The Geographic Names Committee’s Chair, Bruce Roberts, said the original names were too similar and causing confusion.

“There have been instances where emergency service vehicles have gone to the wrong address, which is clearly dangerous and unacceptable,” Mr Roberts said.

“Road names are rarely changed; this is being done because the names are too similar and both in the same suburb of Canning Vale.

“We understand this may be inconvenient for some residents and are very sympathetic to their concerns, but community safety must come first,” said Mr Roberts.

Mr Roberts said the issue was raised with the Geographic Names Committee, based at Landgate, after residents from both Fraser Road and Fraser Road North experienced on-going difficulties with deliveries on top of the confusion experienced by emergency services.

Mr Roberts said Landgate had advised Australia Post, WA Police, St John Ambulance, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, WA Electoral Commission and the Water Corporation.  Due to privacy reasons, residents would need to change their personal details with banks, insurance companies and the like.

Residents are being notified in writing by their local councils and Landgate has prepared an information sheet about the name changes.
