‘Our languages matter’ Landgate celebrates NAIDOC 2017

The theme of NAIDOC Week 2017 is ‘Our languages matter’, and this was Landgate’s focus at a celebration at the Midland Oval on 4 July 2017.

Landgate’s General Manager Sales, Marketing and Customer Service Eugene Suares said the agency was proud to once again sponsor the NAIDOC event which featured live music, dance performances and bush tucker.

“At Landgate our community is at the heart of everything we do, we have a 24-year history in Midland and really value the knowledge, experience and perspectives of our local Aboriginal people,” Mr Suares said.

“This year Landgate displayed a map and information about Aboriginal place names at the NAIDOC event.

“Some Perth examples include Gidgegannup which means place where spears are made; Mullaloo, the place of the red kangaroo; and Nollamara, named after the red and green kangaroo paw,” Mr Suares said.

“It was wonderful to be part of this community event with fellow sponsors including the City of Swan.”

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.  NAIDOC events are held around Australia each July to recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
